The problems I have with DLC are more the day-one offerings that modern PUBLISHERS (not developers) are pushing. Armor suits, horses, costumes, that sort of thing. Things that really ultimately don’t matter that much but are still nice to have (and often times are already on the disks.) That being said, I’m first in line for the new Shogun 2 expansion. I bought all the other ones, too. Shit, I’m sure I’ll pay for the Skyrim DLC as well, and the first Battlefield map pack. Those all came out in 2011, to prove I’ve put my nostalgia goggles away.

As for the second point, it’s more the developers/publishers that DON’T care that I would be upset about. Things like built-in VOIP for Battlefield 3 should have been a no-brainer, but they’re still futzing around with it almost six months after release. They really have addressed a lot of other issues, some of them more minor and others really commendable, but can’t be bothered to add voice? A feature from Counterstrike? But when we talk about a developer like Valve, Bethesda, Rockstar, or others, we see a really clear level of committment to the games they make and to their communities. Everyone says Bethesda makes half-finished games and then ask their community to finish them, but I’ve never felt like that about a Bethesda title. I think that there’s a lot to be said for what they put into a game of such scope and breadth to the point that even omissions of features like horseback combat and spears from Skyrim just make me that much more excited about what can be done, versus what I feel i’m owed for buying it. Battlefield is a game that will never have mod tools, so I find myself less and less appreciative in the same manner of what the future holds for the title.

Finally, the Kepler debacle is pretty embarassing too, honestly. I don’t think she’s necessarily the best candidate to develop certain kinds of games, but she’s not a game developer. She’s a story writer. Any gameplay changes will be made completely independent of her input, ultimately, and even as I’m typing this I’ts really all futile. The core of the debacle were the death threats, the name calling, the outright entitlement that some motherfuckers feel. It’s not your game. You don’t own it, and if it’s not what you want to play I highly doubt you will own it.
